a time to heal….

In the spring of this year Hanni began to have more and more signs that something was wrong but, she hoped it was just stress, nothing a little clean eating and exercise wouldn’t cure but, hard as she tried and hoped, things just didn’t turn around. A trip to the ER at the insistence of her brother Evan may have saved things from getting much worse. After a battery of tests and medical visits Hanni was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Her treatment is being supervised by the team at UCSD Moore’s Cancer Center. In short, this means her bones have stopped making marrow, so her body cannot produce blood cells thus requiring blood transfusions every few weeks. She must have a bone marrow transplant soon, and until a donor becomes available the blood transfusions are needed to sustain her life.

We are praying they soon find a donor match because the “good days” she is afforded between transfusions are becoming fewer and her energy is gone. This once strong lovely dancer is praying for a time to heal. The team at UCSD have told us that the treatment and healing process are a big ordeal. When the donor is found she will have 5 days of chemo followed by the transplant. She will likely be in the hospital for 5 weeks, if all goes well, and then she will be in recovery for the next year while she is carefully monitored (the body will think the new bone marrow is hers and will start attacking Hanni’s own organs) and given immunosuppressant, to give the body time to adjust and make peace with itself.

During this time she will need 24-7 care and because of that her mother Gladi will not be able to hold down a job. What is needed? Hanni has been out of work for months due to illness, and Gladi has been working a few part time jobs to help them get by. Hannalee and Gladi need general financial help for the extra expense from this kind of medical situation, as well as some specific items that the hospital team has told us will help her through this year long journey. Hanni needs prayer and she needs encouragement. Due to the vulnerability of her immune system visitors will be carefully checked at the nurses station or perhaps not allowed depending on her numbers, but cards of encouragement will be just what the doctor ordered! Please give and please pray:
For a Donor match
For protection from infection, and that her body will not reject the transplant
For healing and mercy
For awareness of God’s Hand on her present and her future.
For her heart that it will remain hopeful.
For Gladi to be a strong caregiver and that her financial needs are met.

Hanni will be living at her Aunt Carol’s house for the year of immune therapy because the hospital requires her to be in close proximity.
