Heidi is in Crisis. End-Stage renal failure.

My daughter, Heidi was diagnosed with Diabetes at 8 years old. A tenacious child- she moved through her years with a lust for life, and an indefatigable energy to go for the gusto and be the best she could be- be it brownie scouts, softball, scuba diving, jumping out of airplanes- there were no challenges she turned away from. Never a girl to be in a clique, she has always been inclusive of others- the underdogs, the bullied,- sometimes to her own detriment. Always first to step up when family, friends and work associates needed help- she was always there. She sailed through life with honor, integrity and a giving and joyous heart. And yet, she is such a private person, hesitant to share this crisis; few know. Even me- she wants to protect from worry. (Click see all)

Fast forward thirty years and today her health is in crisis. Today, she is officially on the list to receive a dual transplant- kidney and pancreas at OHSU. Her kidneys are functioning at less than 10%. Her condition is now critical. My heart weeps as I watch this once vibrant woman- now weakening as she awaits a viable donor.

Although Heidi has health insurance, there is much that is not covered; the financial variables are endless with costs anticipated to be over 3/4 of million dollars. She will face significant expenses for transplant surgery, follow-up care which will include anti-rejection medications and post-transplant care.

What we expect when we get the call? Drop and Go!

We must relocate 250 miles away to Portland for a minimum of three to four months for her surgery and post-transplant care and support. And yet, both she and I must maintain our respective financial obligations, housing, and maintenance of our homes.

I am asking, no- I am begging- our friends, family and community to help us through this overwhelming time and join us in fundraising for the nonprofit organization Help Hope Live to assist with critical care, surgery and lifelong anti-rejection medication to name just a few of the financial challenges that lay ahead.

Donations to Help Hope Live can help ease the financial burden of the dual transplant and afford Heidi the opportunity to focus on her recovery and minimize her worry, to allay her fear, to look forward to her marriage to her loving supportive fiance’ David.
