JP Needs Our Help

John Paul “JP” Ross was born on November 28, 1988. He was diagnosed at birth with Alports syndrome, a genetic condition characterized by kidney disease, hearing loss, and eye abnormalities. Almost all affected individuals have blood in their urine which indicates abnormal functioning of the kidneys. People with Alports syndrome experience progressive loss of kidney function which leads to end-stage renal failure, requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation.

At the age of 18, JP’s kidney failure became chronic. He then started his dialysis 3 times a week for four hours every session. Despite his health problem, JP took classes at Santa Barbara City College, and worked at the Arlington Theater and United Cerebral Palsy Association as a Direct Care Professional. He has always lived an active life despite his chronic kidney failure. JP receives tremendous support from his family and friends to fight his health problems. He practices Inner Engineering, meditation, and Yoga. He plays basketball and hikes on the days he’s energetic enough to do so.

It’s been more than ten years now that he’s been on dialysis. His energy has declined and he is no longer able to work. Last February, JP received a call from Loma Linda Hospital informing us that JP was placed on the top of the transplant list.

JP has health insurance, but many transplant expenses are not covered, such as monthly anti-rejection medications he needs to take for the life of his new kidney. We’re asking family and friends to join us in fundraising for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to help JP with critical surgery expenses.
