Jack Vaughn

Dear Family and Friends,

I am writing to ask for your prayers and support for my husband, Jack. Jack had a heart transplant at the University of Pennsylvania on October 30, 2012.

Jack was diagnosed with a genetic heart disease when he was 30 years old. Lehigh Valley cardiologists used medications, pacemakers and a defibrillator to keep him going as his heart disease progressed. After many hospital stays and adjustment to his medications, they decided that it was time to get him listed for a heart transplant, so we were sent to Penn in 2005. They ran tests and adjusted his medications many times until October 30, 2012.

Before his health declined, Jack volunteered at our church, the Wesley Methodist in Phillipsburg. He loved to help out cooking at dinners and wherever he could. He also enjoyed helping at the Lyons Club in Phillipsburg. His other favorite activities were hunting and fishing and he really looks forward to returning to those.

Our recent adventure began on the night of Hurricane Sandy, when we got a call from Penn that they had a matching heart for Jack and we would be transported within the hour. Suburban Rescue sent two volunteers to assist us and we made it through the storm and road closures. It was truly a miracle from God, as He also knew Jack’s time was running out. The next morning, Jack had his operation, and it was a success! He came home ten days later and is doing great!

We need your help! The cost of the transplant surgery itself is staggering. The cost of survival is even more. Post transplants medications are $3000 a month and Jack will need to stay on some of these anti-rejectionsmedications for the rest of his life. Due to the astronomical expenses associated with heart transplantation, a fundraising campaign, in Jack’s honor has been established with HelpHopeLive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years.
