Hi my name is Jim Herndon. I am 52 years old and I need your help. I am raising money through tax deductible donations to Help Hope Live to fund a wheelchair accessible vehicle, a medical expense not covered by insurance.

In May of 2008, I was diagnosed with Spinal Bulbar Muscular Atrophy also called Kennedy’s Disease. Kennedy’s Disease is a rare neuromuscular disease that affects my nerves and muscles, resulting in global muscle weakness, the weakness works from the extremities in; hands/feet, arms/legs, throat, lungs, etc. Over time, SBMA limits mobility, makes swallowing, and breathing difficult, and can rob me of my ability to speak. Most men with Kennedy’s Disease die of choking or aspiration pneumonia.

Between 2008 and 2020, I have also been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Type II Diabetes, Osteopenia, Degenerative Disc Disease, Restrictive Lung Disease, and Forestier’s Disease. As the diseases have progressed, I have become increasingly dependent on others for the most basic activities. I need help to dress, to toilet, and to bathe. I spend every day in bed or my power chair.

I have not walked since February 9, 2019. On that day, my right ankle broke as I was walking across my living room. I am still trying to get used to this completely sedentary lifestyle. When I lost my ability to walk, I also lost my ability to interact with the world outside my door as I can no longer transfer in and out of vehicles.

Medicare and Medicaid cover transportation to medical appointments but nothing else. And wheelchair accessible vehicles are expensive, brand new $80,000 – $100,000 and used $25,000 – $60,000.
