Janet Needs a Liver and Your Help!

Janet Kafer, a thirty-six year resident of Simms and New Boston, Bowie County, has end-stage liver disease. Janet became seriously ill in December 2009 when she was diagnosed with acute liver failure, cryptogenic cirrhosis; 85% of her liver has been damaged. The doctors have determined that Janet’s only chance of survival is a liver transplant.

Janet has been married to Timothy for 36 years. She was employed at E Z Mart for thirteen years and at R.J. Reynolds for three years. However, due to her poor health, Janet was forced to stop working. Janet was fortunate to have been placed on the transplant waiting list at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas and she was just recently listed at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Janet and Timothy have come to realize that funding this life saving surgery is a monumental task and one that they cannot face alone. Even with insurance, there are many out-of-pocket transplant related expenses such as co-pays and deductibles, doctor visits, travel for testing, and the costly immunosuppressant medications that Janet will have to take for the rest of her life.

To help with the financial burden of Janet’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Central Liver Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only.
