Jason Dorwart

Jason is a quadriplegic wheelchair user from a spinal cord injury in 2000, after four years of teaching in Ohio in a temporary position, he has been offered a permanent professorship in theatre and disability studies at Hong Kong Baptist University.

As part of his job at Hong Kong Baptist University, Jason will help establish a collaborative disability studies program in Hong Kong and China. The one problem is that Hong Kong is not the most accessible city. Most businesses have at least one step, and the city is built on rocky and mountainous terrain.

However, there is a stair climbing wheelchair called iBot PMD (https://mobiusmobility.com) that would make the entire city available to Jason, his wife Laura, and their 3-year-old daughter. The university is doing everything they can to provide for accessibility, and have already remodeled a house to be accessible for the family. They are also purchasing a lot of other assistive tech to help get Jason situated. However, the university looked into the wheelchair, but the funds they have can’t cover personal adaptive equipment. Jason is trying to find assistance with some of the cost of the iBot, so that he doesn’t have to turn down this job.

This is an amazing opportunity to advance perceptions of people living with SCI, but Jason, his wife, and daughter couldn’t safely or comfortably live in Hong Kong without some way of navigating stairs and steep roads. The $30,000 dollar cost of the wheelchair is beyond their current means, but would open up the world to them and help them spread positive images of disability around the world. We are hoping to raise a portion of the cost of the wheelchair for Jason and his family.
