Jason Brickey

Unfortunately, since the young age of 15, Jason has struggled with Type 1 Brittle Diabetes Mellitus. A loving husband and father to four young children (soon to be five), Jason enjoys spending every minute with his beautiful family, attending church, playing drums in a local band and living life to its fullest.

Jason suffers from severe retinopathy and has undergone many eye surgeries and laser treatments. As a result of his diabetes, Jason is now legally blind, and has painful neuropathy with severe damage to many other organs. A few years ago, Jason was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure, and with only 10% kidney function, he is currently on dialysis. A kidney/pancreas transplant is Jason’s only hope for a healthy life.

Since starting dialysis, Jason has received both emotional and medical support, and he’s doing much better managing his diabetes – but the damage is irreversible. Jason is currently undergoing evaluations at the Oklahoma Transplant Center in hopes of being placed on the active transplant waiting list. If Jason receives his transplants, he will become a non-diabetic and no longer need dialysis!

Transplants are lifesaving, but very expensive. Unfortunately even with health insurance, Jason will have many uninsured transplant-related expenses such as: co-pays and deductibles, doctor visits, travel and temporary relocation expenses and the costly anti-rejection medications that Jason will need for the rest of his life – expenses that are expected to be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

To help with this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in Jason’s honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Central Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only. In spite of the many struggles that he faces, Jason is optimistic and wishes to pursue a college degree in social work so that he can devote his life to helping others.
