Jennifer recently received approval for surgery to treat SMA Syndrome, scheduled for January 26, 2026, in Virginia. Although she lives in Maryland, there are no trained surgeons in her state who can perform this highly specialized procedure, making out-of-state care her only option. She anticipates a hospitalization of approximately ten days.

This surgery will be Jennifer’s third major operation for rare and debilitating vascular compression diseases—a journey that began with her first diagnosis in August 2022. She underwent surgery for Nutcracker syndrome in April 2023 and for MALS in May 2024. Each surgery was necessary for survival and quality of life. This SMA diagnosis has been the most difficult and frightening chapter of her fight.

SMA Syndrome is a serious and often overlooked condition, with reported mortality rates as high as 33%, and many cases diagnosed only during autopsy. For Jennifer, receiving this diagnosis underscored the urgency of timely, specialized surgical care—and how fortunate she is to have a path forward.
