Jim is in need of a double lung transplant

As many of you know, Jim had open heart surgery in August of 2017, to have a valve replaced. He recovered well after the heart surgery but the money needed for multiple trips to the Cleveland Clinic, hotels, food and transportation costs began to add up, but we made it work.

Then in December of 2020, Jim was hospitalized for shortness of breath and was diagnosed with the disease of IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis). He was prescribed home oxygen therapy and has been on it since his diagnosis. Jim is also on a drug called Esbriet to slow the progression of this disease which costs $12,000 a month. We have been lucky that the company’s foundation is helping us with the cost. This disease continues to get progressively worse and limits the use of his lungs. There is no cure for IPF except for a lung transplant. Since February of 2021 we have been going to the Cleveland Clinic and Jim has completed his evaluation for lung transplantation. Pending review by the transplant board he should soon be listed on the transplant list soon.

Since Jim’s diagnosis we have had more questions than answers and we are still trying to learn about this disease and it’s effects. Unfortunately, we haven’t shared this news with most of our family and friends because we felt we still had too many questions to be answered. But now we know for certain that Jim will be listed as a candidate for lung transplantation. In no way has this affected Jim’s positive attitude. As with his heart surgery his positive attitude will help him recover.

While Jim does have medical insurance, expenses to and from the Cleveland Clinic, meals, and lodging are not included. He will also have expenses for anti-rejection medications that he will need to take for life.
