Jody is a single mom and domestic violence survivor who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in September 2000 after delivering her second child. In 2018 she started experiencing additional symptoms not consistent with MS. Her doctors suspected scleroderma in addition to MS but are still trying to confirm a diagnosis. Since her original diagnosis of MS she has been an active participant in her care as well as advocating for research funding and awareness. Her health has become so overwhelming she no longer has time to bake, craft or spend time with family and friends as she previously enjoyed.

Her health has rapidly declined this year to the point she needs a motorized wheelchair. The cost of the wheelchair is covered by insurance, but the required updates to her home and a vehicle to transport her and the wheelchair are not covered. She doesn’t live in an area serviced by paratransit. The money she receives for disability doesn’t cover her basic needs. Without a vehicle she won’t be able to continue living independently. All of her kids are out of the house and working on careers so they aren’t consistently available to help. Her current vehicle has 220,000 miles and too many problems to fix. She has multiple doctors appointments each week and is unable to work. While she has many neighbors and friends that have helped in the short term, once she gets a motorized wheelchair no one has a vehicle to transport it.

Friends view her as one of the most independent women they know. She doesn’t like to ask for help and does everything she can to maintain her independence. However, the situation has become bigger than she is able to manage. She needs our help to raise money for updates to her home and to purchase a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Her insurance will not purchase the wheelchair unless she can show that her house can accommodate the wheelchair and a vehicle to transport it. Over the years she has run MS support groups to help others facing the same diagnosis. She has actively lobbied at the state and federal level for medical conditions and domestic violence for over a decade. She is a doer and has a heart of gold. It’s time we give back to Jody who has selflessly given to others for so many years. Please donate and share her message.
