Joe Atwood

Dear friends and supporters,

As you probably know, my husband Joe Atwood was involved in a catastrophic car accident that changed our life forever when he was only 33. Joe is an involved father and before the accident, he was a volunteer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. He had his career well underway as an investigator for workers compensation. Following his accident, he was diagnosed as a level C7 incomplete quadriplegic and was told he would never walk again.

Through much determination, Joe has been able to make remarkable progress while attending a highly specialized rehabilitation program. Most of the time Joe uses his electric wheelchair to get around; however when working with a therapist he was able to walk more than 60 feet with a walker.

Though Joe is not running investigations anymore, he is hoping to be able to manage investigation business in the future. To that end, he is studying and plans to take the classes necessary to reach that goal. While I earn enough money to cover our living expenses, Joe’s injury-related costs are very high. Rehabilitation and doctors’ visits all add up, and the physical therapists have recommended more specialized equipment and intensive therapy to continue the progress Joe has been making.

To help with the cost of these uninsured medical expenses and recovery-based therapies, a fundraising campaign in Joe’s honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a non-profit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for more than 35 years.

In 2000, they expanded their mission to include those who have sustained a catastrophic injury. All contributions are tax-deductible, and held by Help Hope Live in the Southwest Spinal Cord Injury Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for injury-related expenses only.
