John “Earnest” Johnson

Dear Friends and Family,
As many of you already know, Earnest has been battling end-stage renal disease for the past several years. For the last four years he has been receiving dialysis treatments three days a week for four or five hours a day. The treatment is keeping him alive, and while he is doing fairly well, his doctors have told him that his only real chance at a healthy life is to have a kidney transplant.
Earnest has completed his medical evaluations for the transplant at Emory University Hospital and has been deemed a good candidate for transplantation. However, even with insurance, Earnest will have many uninsured, transplant-related expenses such as:
co-pays and deductibles, doctor visits, travel and temporary relocation to the Atlanta area and the costly immunosuppressant medications that he will need to take for the rest of his life (currently estimated to be $30,000 – $45,000). Emory has asked Earnest to fundraise for these expenses, and has specifically told him that he must first raise $5,000 before he can be placed on the active transplant waiting list. This presents a challenge to Earnest that he cannot meet alone.
To help with this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in Earnest’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.
