THANKFULLY, STYER LANDS ON HIS BUTT!!

John has always been active, enjoying doing things on his own, and participating in community events. In November 2020, while attaching screws to a gutter cover, his foot apparently slipped off the ladder and he fell to the ground, immediately paralyzing himself from the hips down. He wound up hospitalized and having spinal surgery to secure his spine with rods and screws. He is undergoing continual physical therapy, and various procedures for related issues. Meanwhile he endures spasms and other back pains that may or may not be related to gradual healing.

In what is likely to be a long term circumstance, John has been confronted with a never-ending string of expenses that would not have been considered otherwise. This includes construction for ramps, indoor adjustments to make the house wheelchair adaptable, a wheel chair accessible van for getting to various medical appointments, as well as an exhausting list of personal care products, essential for daily living.

He is substantially retired from the insurance industry, and has been turning wood for many years, marketing his products in about two dozen art & craft shows a year. Those activities have come to a halt. His regular involvement in business networking and his church and the local arts council have also been interrupted.

Time will tell how long it may be before John walks again. Meanwhile, expenses continue to mount.
Perhaps you are a fellow business network member, or a fellow artist, or church member, or a neighbor, or any number of other associations with which John could have with you.

A wheelchair accessible van would enable John to get to a doctor’s appointment without having to transfer from a chair into the car, out of the car into the doctor’s office, back into the car, back out of the car and into the chair back home.

Modifications to his home would enable John to get into all rooms, particularly his bath room, to shave, brush his teeth, etc.

Activities of daily living now involve items wildly more expensive, which will likely persist for a long time.

There is a long list of expenses that will need to be addressed for an unknown time period. You may be in a position to support John in meeting these expenses.

We, the family and friends of John Styer are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live in John’s honor to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with Catastrophic Injury.
