Supporting Julie Post-Transplant!

In February 2014, Julie, my mom, her life was turned upside down when she was told that she had end-stage liver disease and that she needed a liver transplant. The year for her was very tough as her condition worsened and she was placed on the liver transplant waiting list. She never imagined that at sixty-two years of age, she would be faced with the overwhelming cost of a life-saving transplant.

When she got the call from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina on March 13, 2015 at 3:30 in the morning, her life changed. By 9:00 that night, her donor liver was in place and she was in recovery. With her life changed forever, the healing process began.

A year and a half has now passed and with the onset of 2017 near, January means insurance co-payments on her immunosuppressant medications once again. She is on two different types; Cellcept and Prograf. These medications are very expensive for a 30-day supply. Even with insurance, a liver transplant, while life-saving, can be financially draining. With co-pays and these two post-transplant medications that will cost more than $1,000 a month each, Mom will need to take these medications for the rest of her life.

To help with the financial burden of Mom’s uninsured expenses, this same fundraising campaign in her honor, is still active with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law, are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Atlantic Liver Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only.
