On August 2nd, my 33 year old brother Justin, received the gift of life. A liver transplant that quite literally saved him from the brink of death. For the past month, our lives have been turned upside down as we’ve watched him fight for survival. While we are incredibly grateful for this second chance at life, the journey is far from over. Recovery from a liver transplant is complex and grueling. He remains in fragile condition in the ICU and is now also undergoing dialysis for kidney dysfunction. As a type 1 diabetic, his medical care is even more complicated, and the physical toll this has taken on his body is immense.

In order to heal and stay close to his transplant team, he and his wife will need to remain in Chapel Hill for the foreseeable future. This means an extended period of paying out of pocket for lodging, food, transportation, and time away from work. Once Justin is allowed to come back to their home outside of Asheville, consistent follow ups in Chapel Hill will still be necessary. The financial strain has been particularly overwhelming for his wife, Marisa who has been out of work for over 3 weeks.

This past month has tested their limits physically, mentally, and emotionally. Seeing a loved one endure so much pain and uncertainty is something no family should have to face alone. If you are able, we’re asking for your help to ease the financial burden of this incredibly difficult chapter. Every donation will go directly toward supporting their temporary relocation, medical needs, and basic living expenses as he recovers.
