HOPE for KATE

Katlin Plemmons woke up to a day that she imagined to be another beautiful day. After climbing out of bed and walking across the room, she quickly realized something was terribly wrong. The excruciating pain from her feet radiated up her legs, and she was unable to walk. She called out in distress to her Mom, Amy. When Amy entered the room, she saw a look of confusion and pain on Katlin’s face and then looked down and saw her swollen feet. This day would be the first of many to Brenner Children’s Hospital. After several days in the hospital, her condition became worse with extreme fluid retention in her body. Upon peering at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, she was shocked at what she saw.

The next several days many specialists tried to determine what was wrong and the best method of treatment. After a battery of medical tests, the family was told that Katlin had suffered significant kidney damage. The doctors told the family that she had an uncurable form of an unknown autoimmune disorder and was in stage 3 kidney failure. Unfortunately, it was determined that chemotherapy would be the best treatment to halt the damage that was destroying her kidneys. For Katlin, the prospect of losing her hair and retaining significant amounts of fluid proved challenging physically, mentally, and emotionally. However, she returned to school with a smile on her face and met each day like a warrior.

Katlin is like every other teenager who wants to live as normal a life as possible. She always has a smile on her face through all she has endured. Along with her worry about her health, she also worries about the financial toll it has taken on her family of five.

The Plemmons family has incurred considerable medical debt that is not covered by insurance. If Katlin’s condition continues to deteriorate, she will need a kidney transplant and additional funding.
