Keegan Slaugh

Keegan has been dealing with medical conditions since he was born. It started with torticollis. Next came developmental delays with suspected cerebral palsy as he continued to miss milestones. At 15 months old Keegan had brain surgery to help with his Chiari malformation – a life long condition in which the lower part of his brain, his cerebellum, protrudes into his spinal canal, which can cause blockage of spinal fluid and pressure on the spinal cord both of which comes with their own set of complications. Brain surgery isn’t a cure for Chiari, in fact there is no cure, but the hope is the surgery helps create more space and less pressure on the brain, relieving symptoms, however Chiari is lifelong.

After his brain surgery Keegan had a second surgery to place a feeding tube due to life long feeding and swallowing struggles due to: oral aversion, dysphasia (trouble swallowing), and other difficulties. He was also then diagnosed with sensory processing disorder and officially diagnosed with left spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy, something that was a long time coming but with the diagnosis has come a lot of medical needs such as AFOs (orthotics) for his legs; special shoes that fit his orthotics; equipment such as a posterior walker, a wheelchair, an activity chair for inside (Think a wheelchair and high chair combined); feeding tube equipment that insurance doesn’t cover or provide enough of; home modifications to make things more accessible; an accessible van for transportation. A few of these insurance helped with, most were out of pocket and as he grows he will out grow equipment and require new equipment. Cerebral palsy isn’t something that gets better with age or goes away, it’s a life long condition and disability he will always have.

Family and friends of Keegan Slaugh are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with Catastrophic Illness.
