Kelly Barnett needs a lung transplant and needs your help!

Just a few years ago, my friend Kelly Barnett was a very healthy wife, home schooling mom of four boys and all-around active person. Then, on January 30, 2011 she was afflicted with what was thought to be a severe asthma attack but turned out to be a collapsed lung.

Doctors eventually concluded that after Kelly had pneumonia seven years ago, she was possibly infected by a virus which caused a potentially lethal autoimmune response. Soon her lungs were under attack. The only long-term solution is a lung transplant.

Gary and Kelly homeschool their four boys. Always ensuring that there were fun activities and educational opportunities for her children while they were learning, Kelly has always enjoyed taking her children on nature walks to learn about God’s wonderful creations. The Barnetts have always enjoyed hiking and traveling and hope to take their kids on exciting adventures again when Kelly’s health improves. Gardening is one of Kelly’s hobbies; she enjoys preserving all of the fruits and vegetables that her family grows and also bakes delicious breads.

Kelly has recently been put on the transplant list. Currently a transplant costs $800,000. After the initial operation, medications will cost $500 every month. Kelly will need to stay close to the hospital for three months where she will face the additional expenses of parking, meals, and rent.

To help with this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in Kelly’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for over 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Central Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.
