My name is Kelly Evans. I have been a Type 1 diabetic for 35 years. My kidneys failed two years ago and I began peritoneal dialysis a few months later. Currently I do four dialysis exchanges every night as I sleep. In the morning, I disconnect and go to work.

Dialysis is like a band-aid. It’s a lot to manage and my energy takes a hit by the end of the day. Most days, I feel like a personal chemistry project… juggling fluid levels, protein, salt, blood pressure, blood sugar and medicine. But I am alive! And for that I am very grateful. Without dialysis, my lifespan would be about 2 weeks.

I need a kidney transplant and am currently on the waiting list. So now I wait for a phone call – THE phone call. At the same time, there is a living donor undergoing testing to see if she can be approved to donate her kidney to me. SHE IS A MATCH! If approved, I could possibly have surgery in the next couple months! This is where your help is needed.

Transplantation is life-saving, but extremely expensive. To maintain the transplanted kidney is a very costly endeavor. This simply presents a challenge that I cannot meet alone.

To help with the financial burden of the uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign has been established in my honor with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to help patients and families in need for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law and are held by Help Hope Live in the South-Atlantic Kidney Transplant Fund in my honor.
