Ken Burt

Dear Friends and Family,

I am writing on behalf of my brother-in-law, Ken Burt. Many of you know Ken in different ways—as a devoted teacher and Forensics coach, a colleague, a theater buddy, an arts supporter, an old friend from Denver or a more recent friend in Alamosa, and as a brother, uncle, and step-dad—but I’ll bet that all of you can agree on one thing. Ken is one of those guys we all feel blessed to have in our lives. He’s funny and smart and kind and has a passion for just about everything, including my sister, Sheri. They married just last Thanksgiving after a whirlwind 14-year courtship.

Some of you may also know that Ken’s 9-year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia took a serious turn for the worse last year. It’s been a long, tough battle this time, and Ken found it necessary to retire from his beloved teaching job. After receiving a progression of chemo treatments, the disease went into remission, but there are no further treatments available. His doctors told him his only option was a stem cell transplant, which is a chance for a cure. The transplant occurred on August 22 at the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute in Denver.

Even with insurance there are many expenses related to the transplant that must be paid out of pocket. Some of these are co-pays, deductibles, medications and Ken and Sheri have had to relocate to Denver for at least 3 months. At a time like this, the support of family and friends is critical to ensure a successful recovery.

To help ease the financial burden, a fundraising campaign in Ken’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, and are held by HelpHOPELive in the Midwest/West Stem Cell Transplant Fund. They are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.
