Help Save Kesean!
February 13th 2022, my life was turned upside down… I was notified that my son was in a horrific accident and it was not known if he was going to survive. The drive to the hospital felt like hours. Once at the hospital, I learned my son was alive. Although he sustained brain and pelvic injuries, broken femur and foot…. MY SON WAS ALIVE! I know this is all by the grace of GOD. He was placed on a ventilator to breath for him to give his body and brain time to heal. After 3 weeks, Kesean was transferred to a hospital in Atlanta, Shepherd Center for rehabilitation and receive care for his brain injury. Let me tell you a little something about Shepherd Center, my son received exceptional care at this facility. We were treated like family and I am forever in their debt.
Unfortunately, This isn’t the first time I have been here with Kesean. September 30th 2017, Kesean has a near drowning accident where he sustained a anoxic brain injury. This injury went undetected for 5 years until his car accident. I noticed a deterioration in his behavior, I was told that it was just teenage rebellion and I was advised to seek therapy for him. I did everything that was suggested and nothing worked. So now we are here…..
Kesean completed his therapy at Shepherd Center in May. Upon is discharge, Kesean displayed some very disturbing behaviors. I was made aware that this may happen due to his injuries. Kesean suffered frontal lobe damage to both of the hemispheres of his brain. More so on the right side of his brain. This is the part of the brain that controls impulse. So in a nutshell, if he thought it, he did it. No matter what the consequence. His new motto became “Live fast, die young”. Life as I knew it became unbearable very quickly. My dream of becoming a nurse was gone. I never rested, I was always afraid of what I would wake up to. Kesean’s mental disability was taking over everything. His emotions are ever changing. One minute he’s happy, the next he is sad, the next minute he is having a tantrum like a toddler. It seems to be one emotional roller coaster after another. And the worst part is that he cannot control it. My life as I knew it was over and I became a full-time caregiver to my 16 year old with a traumatic brain injury. Work was no different, I was forced to drop down to part time hours because due to his impulsivity he now requires 24 hour adult supervision, which is not covered by his insurance company. We have applied for Medicaid and Medicare, but that process is taking longer than expected.
Quite honestly, I don’t know how I am making it physically, emotionally or financially.
July 21st 2022, Kesean attempted to take his life for the 3rd time since he had been discharged from Shepherd Center. Without throughly investigating the situation, The Newberry County Sherriff’s office decided that it would be best to get the Department of Social Services involved due to neglect because I could not control my son. Needless to say, DSS’s investigation determined that there was no neglect involved.
I do agree with one thing, Kesean needs more help that I can give him. In no way am I giving up on my son…. It is the total opposite. I am trying to SAVE MY SON. Kesean needs to develop the skills to learn to live with his condition. That is something that I cannot do. I found a rehabilitation facility in Benton, Arkansas that can. TimberRidge Neuro Restorative Ranch offers a continuum of community based, inpatient treatment and supported living programs for children with brain injury and other neurological challenges. With the help of Kesean’s transitional case manager from Shepherd Center, Kendra Moon (who has been a godsend since Kesean’s discharge, I applied for admission and he was clinically accepted.
Kesean and I made the 11 hour journey to Arkansas in late August.
The adjustment for him is as I expected, he hates it. He doesn’t like being so far away from home and I feel like he resents me for sending him there. But I don’t regret my decision. My job as his mother is to make the best decisions for him that I can while he cannot make them for himself.
TimberRidge is the best place for him right now. He will be able to get the rehabilitation that he needs so that he can come home and thrive. He looks forward to the day that he can get back on the football field and wrestling mat and compete with his fellow Wolverines.
I am asking that you help me save my son, I cannot do this alone. Insurance is going to help cover his stay at TimberRidge, but unfortunately it will not be enough. There will be travel expenses, deductibles and supplies that he will need while he is there and I need help. I hate to say it but, that is my reality now. Any amount helps, If donation isn’t possible a prayer, care and a share will do. With all of my struggles that I have faced in previous years, what I do know is anything is possible with the power of prayer.
