Hello Family and Friends,

Kristia recently went to an Abilities Expo in NJ and loved it. We found a lot of useful equipment and information for people like her who are “differently abled,” or “normies” as we called them that weekend, and everyone else was the “outcasts.” If you have watched Wednesday, you will understand that reference. That weekend, Kristia found inspiration, motivation, and acceptance among the normies. She learned about different programs available to her and even how to box a little. She exchanged numbers.

Before we continue, let me tell you a little about Kristia and her journey so far….

Kristia has not always been in a wheelchair, as she was born without any medical conditions. She learned to walk early and talk and became an escape artist. Her childhood was climbing trees, running around barefoot, and Lego building. Everything was going well until that day, the day that changed our lives forever. That day was April 13, 2019.

It was a Saturday, and I went to my dad’s house to wake her up because we had things to do. I found her unresponsive and turning blue. She was taken to BMC and then flown out to INOVA and in ICU for eight days. There was little hope of her waking up due to the damage that had been caused due to lack of oxygen. She was diagnosed with an Anoxic Brain Injury that resulted from an accidental overdose. She was not expected to walk or talk again. We remained at INOVA for five weeks, and Kristia never came out of a minimally conscious state.

But there were glimmers of hope. Smiles and laughter appeared during her time at INOVA, and then she said her first word after five weeks, “the fudge bomb.” Except that she didn’t say fudge. We went from INOVA to Kennedy Krieger where she started talking more and was officially declared to be out of the minimally conscious state to a fully conscious state. We got through it all with the help of friends and family.

In the six years since her injury, she has regained the use of her limbs, with the left leg taking a little longer to respond. She learned to flip off people with her middle finger on her left hand thanks to help from Jillian, her massage therapist. Yes, it was a goal. She has met many people and changed their lives with her personality and charm. She returned to school where she met Miss Brenda, who helped her in many ways. She has been able to move to a wheelchair that she can push. She has been able to stand with assistance for a few minutes, even taking steps at physical therapy. She graduated on May 20th and is ready for her next chapter.

The Abilities Expo has already helped in so many ways, and one way that could help her get stronger and regain her strength in her legs is by getting a Velochair. It is a wheelchair that she can move by pedaling. She tried it at the expo and loved it. And that is why we are trying to fundraise through this site. We are hoping to raise enough to get the chair, a new cushion for her wheelchair, as well as a smart drive (power-assist).
