Kristina’s Story

As many of you already know, Kristina Trujillo has been battling renal failure for most of her life beginning with her first kidney transplant at eight years of age, accepting a kidney from our late father, Willie. Since that first kidney transplant, Kristina has had to endure three other transplants. One was from our brother, David, then a cadaver kidney, and the last kidney was donated by myself three years ago, which lasted one year.

Kristina is a very courageous woman who has gone through so much in her life. Yet she has faced these many challenges associated with her disease with such grace, dignity, and courage. She has accepted all of her procedures (and there were many) head on without complaining. During her illness, she still continued to work when she could: as a travel agent earning many awards, then at UNM and lastly at the Metro Detention Center. She also worked as an Avon Representative last year while going through dialysis. However due to her declining health and the effects of dialysis, she is not able to work full-time anymore.

Kristina still manages (health permitting) to help others when asked, cooking and baking for the holidays, birthdays, and special occasions. She continues to have an upbeat attitude and still maintains her sense of humor despite her dialysis three times a week. Thankfully, Kristina has been placed on the kidney transplant waiting list at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona.

Though this will be lifesaving for Kristina, the cost can be overwhelming. When a match is found, Kristina will have to travel to Arizona and stay up to 8 weeks for follow-up appointments with doctors and specialists. She will have to take enormously expensive medications for the rest of her new kidney’s life. Kristina’s devoted family members will be with her when they can but our 80-year-old mother, Millie, will be with her full-time while she is recuperating there.

To help Kristina with her many expenses her family has started a fundraising campaign through HelpHOPELive. HelpHOPELive is a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for nearly 30 years. All contributions are administered by the HelpHOPELive exclusively for uninsured transplant-related expenses. Donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
