Kyler was born July 19th, 2020. While hospitalized at Golisano’s Children Hospital the team of doctors noticed he was having multiple seizures. He was prescribed three seizure medications and was still having 30+ seizures daily. They were transferred to Nicklaus Children’s hospital, where he was intubated immediately. While hospitalized there he did not have any seizures but was having a hard time breathing and feeding since he was on three strong seizure medications with multiple side effects. They were told that Kyler had a condition called hemimegalencephaly. They were told that he would need a surgery called hemispherotomy which involves removing a small area of the brain and disconnecting the right hemisphere to eliminate the seizures. And that he also has hemiplegic cerebral palsy on his left side.

Developmentally, Kyler is around 5 months old. He is not able to sit up on his own, roll over, walk, talk but he is always happy even with 10+ seizures daily.

This surgery will allow Kyler to live a seizure free life and hopefully reduce some of his medications. Surgery is the first step to his recovery. After surgery, he will need to have multiple therapies.

Kyler has a wonderful team of doctors advocating for him John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. However, this specialized care does come at an added cost for Natalie and Dan, who currently live in Ft Myers which is about a 2 hour drive. With only the best as an option for their Kyler, they continue to travel to and from for hospital visits and will need to continue this post- surgery.

Kyler has to see many specialists such as:
·      Occupational Therapist
·      Physical Therapist
·      Speech (Feeding Therapy)
·      ENT
·      Ophthalmologist
·      Endocrinologist
·     Cardiologist

No parent should have to worry about the financial stress while dealing with this. Our hope is that we can take some of the financial burden off of their family so they can focus solely on taking care of their precious baby boy. They need our help more than ever.
