A HEARTFELT REQUEST

Dear Friends and Family,

Please let me take a few minutes of your day to ask for your help. In December 2008, I suffered a spinal cord stroke during open heart surgery. Initially, my stroke left me with both arms paralyzed from the elbow down, the muscles around my waist and right leg paralyzed. After participating in both inpatient and outpatient therapy and being told that I was “fully healed” I am left with partially paralyzed hands, nerve pain and muscle spasms (mainly around my waist) that are not controlled by medication. The therapy has improved my strength and I have learned to use adaptive equipment which has allowed me to return to work. However, the muscle spasms severely limit the amount of physical activity that I can perform before they become severe enough that they force me to stop and rest. This physical activity does not have to be strenuous. Some days just the walking in my daily activities is all that I can manage.

I have researched extensively for alternative treatments for spinal cord damage. This research has led me to stem cell transplants. The transplanted stem cells have the ability to grow into virtually any cell that the body needs. During this research, I found a company in China, Beike, where doctors have had remarkable success with improving the condition of patients with spinal cord injuries. To date, Beike has treated over 2,000 spinal cord injuries. This is the most exciting development for people with spinal cord injury in many years. I am very, very eager to take advantage of it. Beike has told me that I am an excellent candidate for a stem cell transplant and has scheduled me to be treated at their associate hospital in Thailand in October 2014. Once we arrive (a caregiver is required), I will receive six stem cell transplants as well as undergo a rigorous physical rehabilitation program. Stem cell transplantation is costly – and not covered by insurance. The cost for the treatment and hospital fees is $26,300. There will also be airfare, transportation, food, etc. during our four week stay in Thailand. We have only a few months to raise approximately $30,000.

This treatment offers me great hope. I am asking for your financial help. I know times are financially challenging for everyone, so I ask that you give what you can.
