Larry Spino, known lovingly as “Larbear,” is a 31-year-old sheet metal worker from Addison, Illinois, and a beloved son, brother, and friend to many. On June 23, 2024, Larry’s life changed forever when he was shot by a Lyft passenger in an attempted carjacking. The bullet injured his cervical spine (C2–C4), resulting in a devastating spinal cord injury.

Doctors initially told Larry’s family that he might never breathe on his own or eat without a feeding tube. But Larry—true to his fighting spirit—refused to give up. Neither did his family, friends, or care team. Over the past year, Larry has been through four hospitals and rehab facilities, working tirelessly toward recovery.

Today, Larry:

Can breathe and eat with assistance.

Has limited movement—no use of his right arm and only slight use of his left.

Needs full help with daily tasks like showering, dressing, and mobility.

Is learning to walk again in therapy using a body-weight support harness.

His determination is unwavering, but so many of the critical tools and services he needs are not covered by insurance. Larry and his family are now facing massive out-of-pocket costs, including:
