I know firsthand the life-changing impact of a kidney transplant. I was first diagnosed with kidney failure at 21, and since then, managing end-stage renal disease has become a part of my adulthood. After nearly 16 years, my transplant is beginning to fail. As my amazing transplant doctor says, “We’re going to milk this kidney for as long as we can.”

I’m a longtime resident of Jonesboro and Northeast Arkansas, and a recent graduate of Arkansas State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. I love helping people and creating with my hands. Really, I will work in any medium I can! Natalie, my daughter, and I are currently painting the traffic light box on the corner of Nettelton Ave and Flint St. The project is a reflection on the significance of found family. We were over the moon to find out that our little piece of public art is located right in front of the Kindergarten Center. 

The funds raised for my original transplant were essential and lasted about 13 years. Most notably, the contributions allowed me to stay near Vanderbilt, my transplant hospital, with my mom and my son, Laker, during recovery. It gave me an avenue to cover travel, food, and lodging. As I prepare for this next chapter, fundraising support will once again make a critical difference.

I am happy to be employed by St. Bernard’s Behavioral Health, where I get to share my love of art and provide reprieve to our patients as an Activities Tech. Help Hope Live funds will help cover living expenses while I’m unable to work, as well as the transition period when it is safe for me to return to the workforce. They will also support the many trips back to Vanderbilt for ongoing care and monitoring, ensuring both my health and the success of a future transplant.

If I’m fortunate enough to receive a new kidney from a living donor, the funds will also be able to provide aid for them. Additionally, funds may be used to offset the cost of lifesaving anti-rejection medications after surgery. While I am hopeful that insurance will assist, having this support in place provides peace of mind that is priceless. Especially since consistent coverage is never guaranteed!

If you would like to help, we are currently organizing a community art festival that brings together two things that mean the most to me: art and strong community. I’m looking for artists who would like to vend, donate work, or volunteer to help run the event.
