Lisa Simes

Five years ago, my mom, Lisa Simes was diagnosed with a very rare autoimmune disease, Goodpasture Syndrome, which affects your lungs and (or) kidneys. Unfortunately for her, it affected both, and her kidneys failed shortly after diagnosis and she had to start dialysis while she waits for a lifesaving kidney transplant.

My mom is a strong, single parent and takes care of me and my two siblings; I am 14, my sister is 16 and our little brother is 12 and has autism. Nothing stops my mom from being a great mother. She grew up in Warrenton, NC and graduated from Warren County High. She is now finishing up her college major in Criminal Justice Technology. Her illness forced my mom to have a setback years ago when she was in her beginning stages of pursuing her career. My siblings and I saw the struggle in my mom as she tried to take care of us while dealing with declining health, but she managed to do well.

My mom is on her way back to health; she is on the active transplant list at Duke University but her insurance won’t cover her post-transplant medications, and she needs to raise money for the medications before she can get her transplant. We need our mom, and we need your help because raising this money is not something our family can do alone.

To help with the financial burden of mom’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Atlantic Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.
