Lisa Woodfin

As many of you may know my mother, Lisa Woodfin is in need of a kidney transplant. She is a strong hard-working, 48 year old, single mother, whose youngest son is 15 years old. She is also a grandmother, by her oldest son who has two sons of his own who are three and five years old.

Lisa was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease or PKD in October 2000. Although the disease is hereditary (her mother had it) she is the only daughter that inherited the disease. Lisa is presently Stage 5 kidney disease and is trying to stay off dialysis. Her doctors have said that as long as she does not show illness, keeps up her diet and continues exercise she will not have to be on dialysis. However, that can change any day, and this is a one day at a time situation.

Working is what my mother does to keep her mind going and thoughts off of her medical condition. She works full-time at a call center in Ormond Beach so she can keep her son’s life as normal as possible. She tries to think ahead and is trying to get ready for a very expensive medical treatment, a kidney transplant.

Insurance does cover a lot of the actual transplant, there are many out-of-pocket expenses that are not covered, such as, copays for hospital and doctor visits, anti-rejection medications, travel expenses to name a few.

To help offset her uninsured costs, a fundraising campaign in her honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years.
