Lori Needs Our Help!

Lori Hawkins grew up in a small rural farming town in central Illinois. She went on to college and earned 2 bachelor degrees in science. Lori worked until becoming very ill around the age of 48 making work nearly impossible. It was due to an unrelated problem that she needed major surgery at 51. Her body shut down immediately after that surgery. A month later, she became jaundiced and was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. Her illness has progressed to such a point that doctors have told her she needs a liver transplant to survive.

Fortunately, Lori has started the process to be placed on the transplant waiting list at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, IL. She was on the pre-list for a liver however, to move up the list, a caregiver during and after the transplant is a requirement. Now after a long struggle to find a caregiver, she is ready for a transplant.

Transplants are lifesaving but financially overwhelming. She has been on Medicaid which helps pay for some expenses but does not cover a caregiver, relocation closer to the transplant center, transportation, and other unforeseeable expenses. Lori is single, on her own and her illness has been a financial burden. She currently is living temporarily with a friend’s parents as she is no longer able to live by herself due to finances and needing around-the-clock care. Lori needs our help.

To help with this financial burden of uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign has been established in honor of Lori Hawkins with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to help patients and families in need for over 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law and are held by Help Hope Live in the North-Central Liver Transplant Fund in honor of Lori Hawkins.
