Louis Needs Your Help!

Louis (Louie) Cortez is a 62-year-old husband, father and grandfather whose family has always been his top priority. He has struggled with liver disease for many years however, recently his health has steadily declined to such a point that his doctors from UCSF have found cancerous lesions on his liver. They have told us Louis’ only hope for survival is a liver transplant.

Over the past 30 years, Louis has been a volunteer chaplain for the California Department of Corrections. He mentors incarcerated men, giving them hope by leading them to a better life. When he is not doing this he is spending time with his three precious grandchildren.

Now, Louis faces a challenge he cannot meet alone. Transplants are life-changing but financially draining. Even with insurance, Louis is facing very high expenses including relocating for several months to be closer to UCSF or another location if accepted at a second transplant center. Post-transplant medications are very costly, about $1200 a month. He will be required to travel back and forth to San Francisco after the transplant. There will also be co-payments, lab fees and more.

To help with the financial burden of Louis’ uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, are held by Help Hope Live in the Southwest Liver Transplant Fund, and are administered by Help Hope Live for transplant-related expenses only.
