Hi, my name is Louis. I’m a 47 year old Thai American man, and in January 2026, I received a life saving heart transplant at Anschutz University Hospital in Denver, Colorado. After 45 days in the hospital and a series of rare cardiac complications, I’m deeply grateful to my incredible medical team, my donor and their family, and my loved ones who supported me through every moment.

This past year has been the hardest of my life. I lost my father, my cat, and much of my home to water damage, all before my sudden heart failure in November. What I believed was muscle pain turned out to be a rare tear in my heart that left me fighting for my life, ultimately leading to a transplant on January 11th.

My condition is so uncommon that only about 40 similar cases have been reported in the United States. It was rare enough that there was no existing hospital code to chart it. My cardiologist and my cardiac surgeon both said that in their combined 25 plus years of practice, they had never encountered a heart like mine. Anschutz is a teaching hospital, I’ve given consent for my case to be studied in the hope that it may help others in the future.

My recovery will take at least a year, with the first 90 days being the most critical. I’m relearning how to walk, climb stairs, and manage daily life with lifelong immunosuppressant medication. I’m unable to return to work or travel while I heal, but I’m hopeful and determined to rebuild my life by spending time with loved ones, becoming strong enough to start cooking again, and holding on to hope that one day I will return to the tennis court.
