Dear Friends, Family and Community,

Breathing is something most of us take for granted. I know I did. But when your lungs do not provide the air you need, your body becomes paralyzed and you can’t move. I suffer from end stage COPD and have been on oxygen 24/7 for the past three years. My doctors at Vanderbilt University Medical Center told me that my only option is a life-saving double lung transplant.

My daughter Tia and my 1 year old grandson Paxton are the center of my life. I have the best job taking care of my grandson and I love every minute of it. I look forward to someday being able to do so many things with him that I can’t do now.

This brings me to the purpose of my letter. Organ transplantation is life-saving, but very expensive. Even with insurance there are many expenses that must be covered out of pocket. Some of these are deductibles, co-pays, a care giver and travel and relocation for at least three months at the time of transplant. In addition, I will be on a life-time of expensive anti-rejection medications.

To help ease this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in my honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the South-Atlantic Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.
