Maria’s Story

Maria Soreque-Balcasar is a courageous woman who because of a genetic disorder has been battling kidney disease since the age of 15. Unfortunately, Maria was diagnosed with kidney failure three years ago, and since then has been on dialysis 4 hours a day, 3 times a week. During these last three years Maria has undergone many surgeries and health complications.

Upon learning of her kidney failure Maria has completely changed her lifestyle, and lost over 120 lbs. She has been an inspiration to everyone around her. She finds her strength in prayer, and her family. She is determined to fight for her life to be able to raise her three beautiful children.

Because of her illness and many hours of dialysis, her ability to work has been very limited. This will become a much bigger challenge after her kidney transplant. Maria has just been added to a kidney transplant list at OHSU. Transplants, however, are extremely expensive, and costs can be devastating. Even though her insurance will cover most of the procedure, there are payments for hospital visits, clinics, and medications needed for the rest of her life that insurance will not cover.

To help with such expenses, a fundraising campaign in Maria’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Northwest Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. It’s never easy to ask for assistance, but funding Maria’s transplant is a difficult challenge and we need your help. Your financial gifts and prayers will be greatly appreciated.
