In 2009, I was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. While I was able to sustain a relatively normal lifestyle for seven years, in 2016 my kidneys worsened to stage 5 (end renal failure). As a result, in the past 12 months I have gone through 3 surgeries and, since January 2017, I have been on dialysis 20 hours per week in addition to working full time. Medical bills have no mercy, and unfortunately we’ve depleted quite a lot of our family savings in order to pay the tens of thousands of dollars in medical expenses over the past few years. It has been very difficult at times, emotionally and financially, however, I’ve always maintained that a positive attitude and a sense of humor and perspective will get a person through anything.

Last month, my brother Greg was confirmed to be an “identical” kidney match, and I’m blessed and humbled that he has chosen to donate one of his kidneys to me. It will be the best gift I have ever received! Our transplant surgery is scheduled for December 13th, 2017 at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee.

With much coaxing from family and my medical team, my family and I have decided to raise money to pay for uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation, and future anti-rejection medication I will need to take for the rest of my life.
