Micah Morrison needs your help

In May of 2012, at the age of 26, I graduated from Tulane Law School with honors and a hefty amount of student loans. Because I felt my best route in the legal field was to specialize in taxation, I applied and was accepted to the University of Florida Levin College of Law Graduate Tax Program. I started the one year program in August and immediately began the interview process in hopes of landing that perfect job so that I could feel financially secure when asking my girlfriend to marry me. I told my mother that every man needs a job before getting married.

On November 20, 2012 I went to a job interview for a tax attorney position in Lakeland, Florida. I left the interview around 2 P.M. and felt that it had gone very well. A few miles outside of Lakeland, I lost control of my car and ran off the road into a ditch, after my car had become airborne. When the car finally stopped I knew that my back was broken and I could not move my legs. At the hospital, the trauma surgeon said that I would have to have surgery immediately and I most likely would never walk again. My injury is classified as a T12 incomplete paraplegia.

Through much determination, support of family and friends, and attending a highly specialized rehabilitation program at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, I have made considerable progress in the past four months. I am now to the point that with the aid of two therapists and a walker, I can take a few steps in therapy.

Although I have had to set aside my dream of graduating from the Tax Law program in May 2013, I remain hopeful and committed to returning to the program in the near future to complete my education and becoming a productive member of my community with the ability to repay my student loans. And, yes, I still intend to propose to my girlfriend when I finally land that job.

Before this can happen I must continue to receive intensive physical therapy and purchase expensive specialized equipment to use at home in order to regain function in my legs and to help maintain this function. Insurance does not cover these costs as well as many others associated with a catastrophic injury.

To help offset such expenses, a fundraising campaign in my honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. In 2000, they expanded their mission to include those who have sustained a catastrophic injury. All contributions are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Spinal Cord Injury Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for injury-related expenses only.
