As many of you know, Michael was diagnosed with FSGS when he was 15. Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a disease that attacks the kidney’s filtering system (glomeruli) causing serious scarring. The disease has progressed these last three years to where Michael will need a kidney transplant.
Michael graduated from Plano West High School June 8, 2010 and started attending Collin College fall 2010. He has been active in Plano Children’s Theatre since he was six and wants to have a career in TV or film. He attends church at Bent Tree Bible Fellowship in Carrollton.
Baylor University Medical Center has deemed Michael a good candidate for a kidney transplant. On December 9, 2010 Michael recieved a new kidney from his father. Thank you to all the prayers before, during and after the transplant. Michael is doing very well and is already back at school. Transplants, however, are extremely expensive and costs can be devastating. Although Michael has insurance that will cover most of the procedure, we anticipate substantial uninsured costs such as deductibles, out of pocket costs, co-pays for lifelong immunosuppressant medications and Medicare costs.
To help defray such expenses, a fundraising campaign in Michael’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive to help pay transplant-related expenses not met by insurance. HelpHOPELive is a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for more than twenty-five years.
