Michiko Gibson

Dear Friends and Family of Michiko,

As some of you know, Michiko Gibson and I married 30 years ago, and are the parents of two adult children, David Jr. and Afrika. By all accounts, Michiko was a vibrant, active, caring woman. However, 27 years ago, Michiko was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease. In 1991 she became disabled having to leave her nursing profession intermittently due to her battle with numerous medical issues and hospitalizations. Michiko eagerly awaits a lifesaving kidney transplant.

Michiko is trained as a Registered Nurse by profession, and has become skilled in various facets of her career. She is very involved with our local church as an Intercessor; she has a passion to pray for others. She has served as an usher, assisted in coordinating health fairs with fellow colleagues, and taught etiquette and modeling. Going on peaceful bicycle rides, her passion for the sport of horseback riding and the art of drawing are a few favorite pastimes. She looks forward to a time when she is able to return to this vibrant life she once lived.

To that end, Michiko has undergone extensive testing in order to be listed at Jackson Memorial. She has been on dialysis in one form or another for the past 25 years. Although Michiko has insurance, which is a blessing, we have come to realize that funding this surgery is a monumental task. There are many uninsured transplant-related expenses including travel to and from the center, relocation at the time of the transplant for both Michiko and her caregiver, co-pays for medical visits, procedures and post-transplant immunosuppressant medications she’ll need to take for the rest of life.

To help reduce this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in Michiko’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.
