Help Monica get her new kidney!

Monica Ashery has been suffering from Lupus (an autoimmune disease) since 2008 and is now in need of a kidney transplant as soon as possible. Over time her kidney function diminished to the point where she had to begin dialysis in May 2015. Her nephrologist has urged her to begin the evaluation process for placement on the active kidney transplant waiting list. Her evaluations are now almost complete, and Monica has a faith-filled friend who is being tested to become her living donor.

Those who know Monica know that she is a strong Christian who gives thanks for the way the Lord has guided her throughout her life: from its beginnings in a loving Christian family in rural Tanzania, to education at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, to the birth of her son, to a life as a working single parent, and, during the last few years, to nearly full time self-care as she received medical attention for lupus and its related complications.

Monica looks forward to the time after the transplant when she will have renewed energy and stronger health that will allow her to support herself and more actively contribute to the well-being of those around her and in the global community. She has always been ready to help others – from her family members in Tanzania, to friends and colleagues near and far who need a comforting Bible passage and prayer, as well as to the African immigrants new to life in Milwaukee. She remains active in Brookfield Lutheran Church and with the Milwaukee African Women’s Association, MILAWA, where she is currently the president. Monica also serves as a board member and treasurer of Learn for Life Kenya, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit that promotes education.

Even with insurance Monica will have many uninsured transplant-related expenses such as: co-pays and deductibles, doctor visits and the costly anti-rejection medications that she will need to take for the rest of her life.
