It is with great sadness we report that Myah Brashelle Bost passed away on January 9, 2025. Family and friends have been working with Help Hope Live to raise money to help finance uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.

In loving memory of Myah, Help Hope Live will continue to accept charitable donations to help defray uninsured costs that were incurred. Myah had chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live in part because the nonprofit organization provides both tax-deductibility to the full extent allowed by law and fiscal accountability to contributors. WE FINALLY HAVE A DIAGNOSIS! AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Myah’s diagnosis is Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS), a rare genetic condition that has taken years of research to discover. CVS often causes extreme nausea and vomiting episodes accompanied by severe stomach pain. While mild symptoms were present throughout Myah’s life, extreme stress pre and post COVID 19, caused increased frequency and severity of her symptoms. CVS episodes can last between 2-32 hours and produce severe dehydration, which causes kidney injury. CVS episodes also result in frequent visits to the emergency room for intravenous medications and lengthy hospital stays.

During CVS episodes, Myah’s blood pressure and heart rate would sometimes approach dangerously elevated levels, making it a life-threatening condition. She is often admitted to the hospital for treatment of hypertensive emergency. From October 2021 – October 2023, she has had thirty-two hospital admissions and has suffered greatly! Medical providers know very little about CVS, which made diagnosis and treatment extremely difficult.

While we raced to find answers, each CVS episode continued to cause irreparable damage to her kidneys. We watched helplessly while her kidney function slipped away. While we now feel fortunate that we know the cause, the answer came too late to save any of her kidney function. For that reason, MYAH NOW NEEDS A KIDNEY TRANSPLANT! She has End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and receives dialysis weekly to stay alive while she waits for a new kidney.

Myah’s health challenges began at age 9, with the diagnosis of Diabetes. We learned that her Diabetes had gone undetected for about 18 months. As a result, she began to show signs of kidney damage by age 11. While we knew one-day she may face the need for a kidney transplant, we had no idea that she would lose all her remaining kidney function in less than 9 months due to CVS.

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!

Myah is now receiving treatment from a world renown CVS Specialist at Ohio State University (OSU) in Columbus, OH. While there is no known cure, it is manageable and will become more manageable after transplant. That is the good news! The sad news is we still have obstacles to overcome to get her to transplant.

First, her CVS specialist is one of only a handful of doctors internationally who treats this condition, and they are located one hundred miles away from home in Columbus, Ohio. We have been traveling back and forth to Columbus for treatment over the last few months and she has improved greatly.

We are hopeful that Myah will also have her kidney transplant surgery at OSU. This creates yet another obstacle. In order to prepare Myah for transplant and enable her to have the best outcome, we will need to temporarily relocate to the Columbus area for 2-3 months or longer. Commuting back and forth to Columbus will put far too much stress on Myah’s body. The best option is for her to be near her OSU medical team after transplant.

We have incurred and will continue to incur expenses that health insurance does not cover, such as lodging, transportation, food, insurance copays, incidentals, and now relocation expenses.

MEET MYAH!

Despite these challenges, Myah, who turns twenty-nine this year, remains one of the most upbeat, loving, and generous people you will ever meet. She has a variety of gifts to offer the world. As a youth, she attended a program for gifted children and excelled in the areas of math, science, and the arts. She was a published author by eighth grade and has won awards in writing, visual arts, and history. She spent years as an athlete, playing and excelling in soccer and basketball – the sport she absolutely loves! She played varsity basketball as a first-year student. She did all of this while carrying the burden of living with Diabetes. Day in and day out, year after year, she showed the mark of a true champion!

Her desire was to play college basketball, but her health prevented that. Not willing to let that stop her, she set her sights on a job at Nike, Inc. as a retail sales associate, and has maintained employment there for 8 years. She figured if she could no longer be an athlete, she could help other athletes by equipping them with what they need to play their best game.

She excelled at her job at Nike as well, leading the reorganization of a specified area of the store, assisting with business growth in that area. She did this, while pushing through illness daily. She has always been a team-player, willing to do whatever she could to help her team succeed – no matter where that team existed.

Before her illness took a downward turn, Myah had gone back to school to advance her career (after two previously failed attempts, due to health challenges). This time, through sheer determination, Myah excelled in her academics. She was-inducted into the National Honor Society and Leadership Academy for achieving a 4.0 in Business Administration. Her career goal is to continue her education and move up the corporate ladder at Nike, Inc. doing a job she loves for a company she loves.
