Nancy Drake (Botbyl)

Nan Drake, my mother, is a 55-year-old woman who is very ill. She has always been one of the strongest and kindest women I know. She is always there to help everyone no matter how bad she is feeling. She has such a positive attitude and always has smile on her face no matter what adversity she is facing.

Now she needs our help. Her only hope after years of struggling with Polycystic Kidney Disease is a transplant. The cost of a transplant is completely overwhelming. She is always the first person to help others, but has never been the type to ask anyone to help her. I hope the kindness she has shown so many people throughout her life comes back to her now that she is the one who needs help.

Nan grew up in Sandusky, OH and graduated from Sandusky High School. She worked her whole life in public service with low income individuals doing everything she could to help those in need including being a foster parent. After battling various other serious health issues aside from the kidney disease, she was forced to go on disability recently as her health rapidly declined. My mother has always been a hard-working, giving woman and now she needs some help from anyone with enough kindness in their heart who is willing to assist. She hopes to receive a transplant soon because she is eager to get back to having the energy to keep up with her five wonderful grandchildren.

A transplant will save her life, but will be financially impossible as non-covered expenses for the transplant can range from $50,000 – $360,000. Even though she has insurance, Nan is facing an enormous amount of bills, between medication and doctor visit co-pays, lab fees and any other necessary tests and follow ups that will happen post-transplant for her. Of course, being who she is, she is more worried about making sure whomever donates a kidney to her doesn’t incur any expense while they recuperate from donating so this fund will assist as allowed by law. The donor’s medical expenses will also be covered under Nan’s insurance.

To help with the financial burden of uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign has been established in honor of Nan Drake with Help Hope Live, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to help patients and families in need for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by the law and are held by Help Hope Live in the Great Lakes Kidney Transplant Fund in honor of Nan Drake.
