Help Save Natalie’s Life

You never realize how important your lungs are until you’re forced to function without them. I can attest to this personally due to my recent struggles with breathing which led to my diagnosis of Pulmonary Fibrosis. What started a few years ago as a heavy cough and slight shortness of breath soon became an unbearable condition that requires me to be connected to multiple oxygen tanks. I can’t walk up stairs, cook, bathe, or perform other basic daily tasks without becoming winded; many times, I require the assistance of a loved one. A lung transplant is my best chance for a healthy life.

As a licensed RN (Registered Nurse) of twenty plus years, I’m used to taking care of myself and others for a living. I never thought I’d see the day that the tables would turn and I’d have to give up my profession that I love dearly to become a care seeking patient. The transition has been very stressful and difficult to deal with.

I am currently listed for a lung transplant. While organ transplantation is lifesaving, it is also very expensive. Even with insurance, I will have many uninsured transplant related expenses including doctor’s visits and costly immunosuppressant medications that I will have to take for the rest of my life to remain healthy and alive. One of the medications alone is over $1200 per month. The transplant team at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s has recommended fundraising to help with these expenses.

To help with this financial burden, a fundraising campaign in my honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Mid-Atlantic Lung Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only.
