Neville (Junior) Cameron

Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,

On May 6, 2013, my loving husband, Neville “Junior” Cameron had an accident at work that changed our lives forever. Neville fell from a ladder. We were told that he would be lucky to get feeling back in his fingers and arms “so that he may at least feed himself”.

Anyone who has ever met Neville knows he follows the beat of his own drums. We have seen such inspiring determination and spirit from him. He has not let a collapsed lung, surgery, feeding tube, staph infection or being quadriplegic hold his spirits down. He has joked, cried and led his own treatment plan even when he was unable to physically speak. Neville is at the Shepherd Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta. He currently has no feeling in his fingers and from the hips down, but does have feeling and some movement in his shoulders and arms.

In the past five weeks since the accident, we have seen such progress. He is no longer breathing with the help of a machine, has transitioned to eating, no longer has pneumonia and is able to speak without resting when conversing with family and friends. The highlight of Neville’s day is when our children Calib (5) and Anissa (2) visit and make him laugh.

In spite of the many struggles that he faces, Neville remains hopeful that he will be able to return to a productive life in the community. We need to make modifications to our home and have a vehicle that can transport his motorized wheel chair. We also will be facing many other medically related expenses not covered by insurance. Some of these are intensive rehabilitation therapy, equipment and insurance premiums. I will not be able to return to work because I will be Neville’s full time caregiver. This puts us up against a challenge, in addition to the fact that he was self-employed, that we cannot meet alone and your help is desperately needed.

A fundraising campaign in Neville’s honor has been established with HelpHOPELive), a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for nearly 30 years. In 2000, they expanded their mission to include those who have sustained catastrophic injuries. All contributions are tax deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Spinal Cord Injury Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for injury-related expenses only.
