Please Help Nick Regain Mobility and Independence

On September 20th, 2021, our son Nicholas was involved in a serious motorcycle accident. He was taken to the ER at Paoli Hospital where they had to put him under sedation due to the severity of his wounds. Their orthopedic surgeon performed immediate surgery to stabilize Nick’s badly broken right leg and left ankle. His femur, tibia, and fibula were all crushed. That same leg had a large open wound from a compound fracture from the tibia which had to be closed and we were told he may lose his leg due to the severity of the wound and fear of infection.

The next day Nick was air lifted to Lankenau Medical Center to be seen by their orthopedic trauma surgeon for more surgery. He had severely broken numerous bones in his left foot and shattered his ankle. He also broke his left elbow as well as 4 ribs. Along with those injuries, Nick had severe head trauma and brain hemorrhage. He also had a fractured sacrum which also needed surgery to repair. He spent two weeks in the ICU under sedation and had three more surgeries. So far he has endured 7 surgeries, and will hopefully only need 1 more.

This accident has been devastating to Nick and his family. Nick has always been a very active guy. He had been working at starting his own landscaping business. He’s a very talented man as he has quite the eye for creating beautiful outdoor spaces and landscapes. He took great pride in his workmanship. Nick also loves animals. He has two 50&70 pound rescue dogs and 26 chickens. As you can imagine this has been very difficult on our family financially and we’ve all had to adjust our schedules to accommodate Nick’s medical needs and constant care.

Nick’s prognosis for now is non weight bearing on either leg for at least 6 months or more. His broken elbow is non weight bearing for now also. He is unable to do any physical therapy at this time due to the amount of injuries and we are still very hopeful that the wound from the compound fracture will continue to heal with no more complications or surgeries needed. There may be some skin graphing needed but for now we are hopeful that will not need to happen.

His road ahead is a long one. He continues to try and keep a positive attitude, but struggles daily with the pain and lasting effects of the head trauma.

There are many medical expenses associated with getting Nick well again. Insurance only covers a portion of the expenses. There are the surgeries, not fully covered, the test, the medications, co-pays, the travel and of course there will be much cost for the physical therapy that will come when he is strong enough to endure the daily therapies.
