At 49 years old, Patty Stephens established herself as a Quality Assurance Automation Engineer, dedicating eleven years to her profession. In November 2023, Patty’s life changed dramatically when she experienced three strokes. As a result, she now uses a wheelchair. Despite these challenges, Patty remains determined to regain her independence and resume driving. To achieve this, she requires a specially designed vehicle that addresses her mobility needs and support to update her home, ensuring she can fully access and utilize all areas of her living space.

Patty is dedicated to reclaiming her independence by resuming driving. To accomplish this, she needs a vehicle that is customized to suit her mobility requirements. Accessible vehicles, which are equipped with modifications for individuals with mobility challenges, can cost more than $60,000. This price is a significant barrier for Patty, as she relies on a fixed income. Having access to a properly adapted vehicle would empower Patty to participate in community activities, visit friends and family, attend important medical appointments, and take care of her own errands.

In addition to her transportation goals, Patty is focusing on making her home more accessible. These modifications are crucial for her ability to move safely and comfortably throughout her living space, supporting her daily routines and enhancing her quality of life. Planned renovations include updating the bathroom with either an accessible shower or a walk-in tub to make personal care easier, installing new flooring that can support the weight of her wheelchair, and altering the kitchen island so she can cook independently. Unfortunately, these improvements are currently unattainable due to her fixed income, with costs potentially reaching $15,000 or more.

Patty Stephens’s family and friends are actively fundraising for the nonprofit Help Hope Live. Their goal is to purchase a wheelchair-accessible vehicle and renovate her home to ensure Patty has full accessibility and the ability to comfortably navigate her daily life.
