Being disabled with a multitude of rare and chronic conditions that cause pain and multi-systemic dysfunction not only prevents P’s ability to work, it is also REALLY expensive. (P gets a whopping $1,586 per month on SSDI “disability insurance.”)

Managing an invisible and dynamic disability is basically P’s full-time job. It is really labor-intensive, time consuming, and expensive to keep P alive and (relatively) healthy. P needs a lot of medical treatments and home modifications that are not covered by insurance. It’s like constantly wrangling a gaggle of cranky feral toddlers, who happened to also be problematic Gremlins.

There are lots of medical treatments and home modifications needed that are not covered by insurance. Food is also very expensive when you’re allergic to everything. P has had almost no income over the past decade since having to quit P’s last full-time job. While P has been receiving some financial support from the government, P has been surviving mostly from the generosity of two family members and a handful of friends. This campaign is happening now because the costs and need have become overwhelming.

While P is mostly housebound due to energy, pain, and mobility limitations, P is basically Rapunzel stuck in a castle. Except P has very short hair. And no royal suitors to speak of.

Since P’s condition takes up so much time, and energy, it has also prevented the ability to have a normal, regular, full social and personal life. P has turned to photography, painting, writing, and comedy, and other forms of creativity to capture and cope with what it’s like to be chronically ill.

P’s lived experience with disability has sparked a passion for advocacy through the healing power of comedy. P created the Crip Comedy Collective, a virtual community made for, by and of disabled folx who come together regularly support each other in their crip life and creative pursuits.

Help P make get the medical attention needed, and the necessary upgrades to P’s home so it may be more accessible, both of which can substantially prevent further deterioration of P’s condition and improve quality of life.
