Randy Leonard

As most of you may know, Randy Leonard was born with a rare Congenital Heart Defect: Pulmonary Atresia with Intact Ventricular Septum. Since birth, Randy has undergone 5 closed and open heart surgeries, in addition to, many other biopsies and procedures to get him to this point in his life. He currently has only 2 functioning Chambers of his heart.

At birth, Randy was given a 10% chance of surviving, but he has always been a fighter and by a miracle of God, he was able to live a limited, but mostly normal childhood. His doctors then told us that Randy would not live past 21 without a heart transplant, but he persevered and yesterday he celebrated his 38th birthday surrounded with immense love and family. Randy’s heart has been deteriorating over the years and is now unable to keep up with normal functions to survive. It’s caused many difficulties and damage to organs, specifically, cirrhosis of the liver. He was put on oxygen to help with daily living. It’s been a long, and at times, uncertain road for Randy.

Randy has been evaluated since this past spring by a specialized team at Northwestern. He was placed on the heart transplant list on July 2, 2020 as a level 4 priority recipient. With his rapidly decreasing health, he recently was re-evaluated and moved to level 2 priority on the transplant list. He was admitted as an inpatient to Northwestern Memorial Hospital today, Friday, August 21 for monitoring and support as he awaits a heart transplant.

Randy’s journey has been a bit of a roller coaster and he has a very long road ahead of him still. Randy is a loving, hardworking, and devoted husband, family man, and father of his 8 children. He’s an active member of the Canton Assembly of God and community. Randy has tried to not let his condition get in his way and has been blessed and filled with God’s hope, love, and strength to carry on through adversity.
