Rebecca Scott

Rebecca is a 57-year-old Licensed Clinical Social Worker and is currently the Vice President of Clinical Services for Volunteers of America of Florida. On June 26, 2025, Rebecca had surgery to remove a pacemaker and extract the two leads in her heart. Unfortunately, she suffered severe complications during the last lead extraction and had to have emergency open heart surgery to repair her superior vena cava, a major blood vessel. She lost a great deal of blood, resulting in innumerable ischemic strokes in every area of her brain.

Rebecca has dedicated her 25 year career to helping people faced with challenges including medical emergencies, liver disease and transplantation, and homelessness. When not working, she enjoys spending her time with family and friends, reading a good mystery, cuddling with her dogs, playing Rook and Aggravation, or sitting on the best beach in Florida and listening to the waves. She has an amazingly wicked sense of humor along with extra helpings of empathy and intelligence.

Rebecca will have life-long challenges from her brain injuries. She currently has moderate to severe cognitive-linguistic, balance, and motor control deficits that should improve over time. However, those will, most probably, never wholly resolve and she will have on-going medical needs including physical and speech therapies, possible assistive devices, and home modification. Rebecca has made amazing progress in just the last 10 days, and her goal is to be at home again soon with Vick and their fur-babies.

The most immediate need she has is remodeling a bathroom in her home to be accessible and accommodating for mobility issues, so she can safely go home when done with inpatient rehabilitation. That includes widening doorways, removing the current bathtub and creating a large roll-in shower with seat. Estimates for that work total approximately $15,000.
