Robert Vanemon’s Journey: From Catastrophic Injury to Hope, Recovery, and Community
A Personal Story and Fundraising Appeal for Quality-of-Life Needs
Robert Vanemon is proud to call Williamsport his lifelong home. He is a father to two wonderful daughters. Prior to his world changing, He was deeply involved in music sense, working as a sound engineer for bands, DJing, hosting open mics, and also building websites as a computer programmer. Life was full of creativity and connection.
Accident and Immediate Aftermath
Everything shifted dramatically on July 4, 2016. That day, he got into a car with someone who had been drinking. The accident that followed left him with devastating injuries: He broke his C5 and C6 vertebrae and severed his T10, which made him a quadriplegic. Nearly all the ribs on his right side were broken, and those were just a few of the many injuries he sustained.
They rushed him to surgery to stop bleeding in his spinal cord. The doctors gave him a 5% chance of survival and waited 36 hours before attempting further procedures. After that, he endured a 10-hour back surgery with hardware added, followed by neck surgery to insert rods. Complications piled up—a blood clot in his leg required a stent, and his left lung was punctured each time he was turned, leading to another surgery to plate his ribs and the placement of chest tubes on both sides.
Breathing on his own became impossible, so he spent 9 days intubated before receiving a tracheostomy. When attempts to use a feeding tube failed because his esophagus shut down, he went 10 days without food until a direct stomach tube was installed. Slowly, he was weaned off the ventilator, eventually able to breathe on his own with some assistance.
Rehabilitation and Medical Challenges
His recovery journey took him to the Magee Spinal Institute in Philadelphia. After a short stay, He suffered another setback: he took a pill with applesauce and woke up in the ICU on a ventilator. Once he was stabilized, he developed a persistent fever that lasted eight weeks, requiring a move to another hospital. There, doctors discovered that MRSA was attacking the lining of his lungs.
After recovering, he transferred to rehab in his hometown—a decision he will never regret. The staff was incredible, and he met another paralyzed man who remains a close friend. But life after rehab was tough. He kept his physical and emotional pain to his self, frequently landing back in the hospital. Depression settled in, and at times, giving up seemed easiest. He spent two years confined to bed, only seeing the sky in route to the ER. This isolation brought severe infections and repeated hospitalizations.
Major issues with his throat and esophagus have plagued him since the accident. He has undergone more than 100 endoscopies and even failed surgery. He developed a fistula—an abnormal connection between his esophagus and airway—likely from a second trachea placement, and a stricture that periodically blocks his esophagus, requiring it to be stretched so he can eat or swallow. These challenges have been relentless.
Turning Point: Finding New Hope and Purpose
In 2021, while still bedridden, he met the love of his life. This marked the beginning of a new chapter—one filled with hope and partnership. Together, they navigated the difficult process of sitting up for the first time in years, even though it meant passing out in the hospital. Our journey inspired us to start a YouTube channel to show others there is hope and that giving up is not an option. We make videos almost daily, sharing our story in hopes of helping others see what’s possible.
We’ve found purpose in creating T-shirts, crafts, and music, all to raise funds and awareness. Staying busy and helping others through our videos and outreach has given him a renewed sense of meaning. His partner’s support is priceless—she reminds him daily that he can make a difference.
Current Needs: How Your Help Can Transform His Life
As much as we strive, there are a few essential items we simply cannot afford, and each would make a profound difference in his daily life:
1. Wheelchair Van: Right now, travel is extremely difficult. he can only use his manual wheelchair for short periods, which makes outings exhausting and limits our ability to attend appointments or just get out and enjoy life. A wheelchair-accessible van would mean freedom to be present in his daughters’ lives, participate in community events, and reclaim some independence. It would lift a huge burden off both him and his partner, allowing them to experience life together outside of hospitals and home. And I don’t need a new van, a used van would be more then fine with me.
2. True Air Loss Mattress: The mattress he has is cobbled together from old parts, held together with super glue to prevent air leaks. A proper air loss mattress is more than just a bed—it’s essential for preventing dangerous pressure sores, managing pain, and giving him peace of mind. Right now, sleeping in a regular bed causes unbearable pain and requires turning every two hours, which is exhausting and distressing. A quality mattress would mean restful sleep, less pain, and protection against further medical complications.
3. Wheelchair with Tracks: Nature has always been a source of joy for him—hiking, hunting, and exploring the woods. Since his injury, he misses those experiences deeply. A wheelchair with tracks would restore my ability to get outdoors, reconnect with the world he loves, and participate in activities that lift my spirit. It’s not just about fun; it’s about reclaiming a vital part of who he is and sharing those moments with his loved ones.
4. Mouth Pad: New tech that lets you interact with different devices.
